To overcome that gap, the optional SSD is much speedier (1,033MBps read and 430MBps write on Black Magic), but then you're essentially adding a pricey SSD into the d2 Thunderbolt 2's shell.

To put that into perspective, the Western Digital My Passport Pro ( at Amazon) is in the same ballpark (211MBps read and 204.8MBps write on Black Magic), but speedier SSD-based drives like the LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2 fare much better (1,135MBps read and 1,099MBps write on Black Magic). Similarly, it scored a 208.7MBps read and 210.6MBps write speed on the Black Magic disk test. Performance Out of the box, the drive performed fairly well via its Thunderbolt 2 interface, with a 207MBps read and 210MBps write throughput on the AJA System test. Note that installing the card eliminates access to and support for the USB 3.0 port, so tread carefully if you need to share the drive with a non-Thunderbolt-equipped system. LaCie's d2 SSD ($299.99) option adds a speedy internal 128GB solid state drive (SSD) to the d2's chassis. The drive is also compatible with Apple's Time Machine for quick automatic backups.

The setup program also gives you the option to install Intego Backup Assistant (Mac), LaCie Genie Timeline (Windows), or encryption software for either platform.

A visual slider lets you format the drive completely HFS+ for Macs, completely FAT32 for sharing between Macs and Windows PCs, or some ratio of both (for example it defaults to 1.2GB FAT32 and 4.8GB HFS+). When you first start up the d2, it asks you to run a formatting utility.

There are also 3TB ($299.99) and 4TB ($399.99) models available that use the same chassis. The drive we tested has a 6TB capacity and spins at 7,200rpm. There are also internal and external dampening rubber bushings and panels to quell vibrations during operation. Hard drive fans are notoriously loud, so their absence makes the drive more attractive if you crave quiet in your immediate work environment. The chassis is fanless, so the only openings are for the Kensington lock port, the power adapter, two Thunderbolt 2 ports, and a single USB 3.0 Micro-B port. Like the LaCie 2big Thunderbolt 2 (12TB) ( at Amazon), it has a bright-blue LED lit button on the front panel that shows both power and drive activity.
